My People and the World

My People and the World

Samih Al-Qassem

I stretch my hands in supplication;
I knock at the doors of every nation:
My people serve thee, Lord, in adoration,
Seeking their freedom, dignity, salvation,
But the world lends them deaf ears;
Nobody wants to see, and nobody hears,
Though they have paid the dear price,
And offered at every altar their sacrifice,
Everybody seems bent on driving them away,
Determined to deny them, to stall, to betray;
And they seem to live in an endless nightmare:
The victims of an infernal, deadly snare;
From place to place they are ever hurled,
Awaiting the rise of the conscience of the world!
